Time by AJ Damian
The gods would know what went on. One by one the younger
people turned their black dragon mounted hourglasses knowing exactly how
much time they had to live.
It wasn't the gods who ordered this, but
the humans who held higher statuses among them. The horrible part was
they obeyed without question.
Once the younger ones outlived
their usefulness, they turned over their hourglasses obediently, not
even saying goodbye to their parents, friends or work colleagues. They
just died when the dust in the hourglass swirled round and cracked the
glass bowl at the bottom, spilling out.  It invaded their mouths and choked
them to death. Tay-u stared at his hourglass, fingers steepled, he
decided not to obey, he broke one of the ultimate laws - making a bond
with another. This other being a man meant he had a connection of love
and he had long since decided not to turn the hourglass. He meant to
live a while longer even before the robots would come to destroy their
resolve.
