After an accident on his new bike on his sixteenth Birthday, Norio Tsubusaya arrives at Hospital, and when he begins to recover from a broken right foot, he starts to see people in a whole new way – as animals. While Norio gets back his strength he wonders why it is that when he is spotted by a male or female they are instantly attracted to him.

As he is approached by all the males at school, one takes particular interest in him, and he turns out to be Kunimasa Madrame who knows full well he has been pursued by all manner of interested suitors, and they all look to him as animal in appearance. Confused to find Kunimasa knows what he sees, Kunimasa tells him a deep secret Norio has never known in all the years he has been alive. He is handed a book that explains everything Norio needs as information for what he truly is. Norio still finds it unusual that there are still students of varying ages interested in dating him, and still fight over his hand in marriage.

Tarako deals excellently in this manga with what Norio would be experiencing in this first volume. His school life, his prior expectations of finding a girl, kissing her and eventually dating her are destroyed when he realises he has an attraction to the animalistic and charming Kunimasa. The story is not just one of the interesting parts of the novel. There is an explanation of the variety of species in the animal kingdom and that they select partners on a compatibility scale. The explanation is also reminiscent of the ancient Aztec animals in their astrology.

Humour in this is fast paced and concentrates on Norio's virginity and lack of knowledge of the same sex. A running joke in this is how Kunimasa always likens his constant whining as a girl would. Originality is the true hook with this manga as the reader will quickly become engrossed in the story and the comical characters of Kumakashi – senpai, and Kunimasa. The young Norio suffers both their attentions yet there is real affection toward Kunimasa after all. The real question is does he really want to bear Kunimasa's child, or will he deny him what he has been looking for all his life.

Love Pistols has a lovely cover, which represents Kunimasa showing all his muscular splendour, captivating the reader with the vibrant colours. Interior artwork is rendered with great care. Norio's features are excitable, and his doe eyes will make the reader realise why he is being asked out all the time. Fans of Fruits Basket will admire both the artwork and the humour in this first volume.

Verdict: Love Pistols is a raunchy tale of animal magnetism taken literally! This is enjoyable and skilfully drawn.
